To step into the atmosphere of a place which we are going to visit, there is nothing better than to read an impressive story that takes place right there. And, you’ll never believe it, we have the perfect legend for Soria: The Spirit’s Mountain, a dark tale of fear and the Templars, that the famous Spanish writer, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer wrote, and takes place here, in his wife’s city.

The story of Gustavo Adolfo takes place in a Medieval Soria, the truth is that the city barely has any traces of previous eras. A stone’s throw, we know this, the Numantias were here, and they did what they had to do with the Romans, but in the location of the current capital, there are no Roman remains, nor Visigoths, nor Arabs. It seems that it was a settlement of no great importance, located in a border territory and which the Christians took over in the eleventh century. Then came its repopulation, and soon, instead of mushrooms, Romanesque buildings began to sprout of which, to this day, Soria retains an exceptional collection.

The Church of Santo Domingo, the Cathedral of San Pedro and San Juan de Rabanera are part of a set of monasteries, churches, convents and hermitages that the medieval times left here when the city truly started to grow and reclaim its place in the books of history. Around here too is the monastery of San Juan de Duero, founded by the Knights of the Order of Malta, and which was an inspiration for Bécquer.

But do not think that everything worthwhile here comes from the Middle Ages. The Soria of the following centuries also awaits your visit, by all means. In the Plaza Mayor, you have the Palace of the Twelve Lineages, with the shield divided into equal parts for each of the families that once ran the show around here. The Renaissance Palace of Los Ríos y Salcedo is also very close, another of those manor houses that the nobles of that time loved to build.

Not so aristocratic and more modern are the traces of Antonio Machado, the other poet who we always associate with the city, because like Bécquer, he married a lady from Soria, and wrote long stories about these lands. Antonio´s love affair is something more peculiar, so to speak, because when the wedding took place, in the Church of Santa María la Mayor, he was thirty-four years old and she, Leonor, only fifteen. However, they say that it was a very happy marriage during the short time that the fortunate destiny granted them.
