Most people who visit Burgos go straight to the cathedral, but that doesn't mean that there are many other things to see in this historic and warrior city. Oh yes, there are!

The warrior thing we say it, more than anything because its birth is usually placed in the year 884 when the Christians decided to raise a fortification on the banks of the Arlanzon River to stop the Muslim armies.

But focusing on the things you have to see around here, you can start with the Arco de Santa Maria, which looks kind of like a castle from a fairy tale. It was built in the fifteenth century in the place of one of the original gates of the medieval wall of Burgos.

The city walls play an important role in Burgos since they have a lot to offer, with its abundant remains of the turrets and bastions that once protected the city and that formed an imposing fortification with ninety towers, twelve gates, a hight of ten meters and a thickness of three meters. Even the French managed to benefit from such work in the Napoleonic wars; guarded by this mass of stone, they resisted to the attack of the Spanish, English and Portuguese armies.

Also thanks to its walls, it is very possible that the cathedral has reached our days and can be declared a World Heritage Site. And that is very fortunate, because it is a splendid Gothic temple, with its pinnacles and its stained glass windows, it was erected in the thirteenth century, and it has become the symbol of the city. However, you should not fall in love exclusively with this monument, because Burgos has many churches, monasteries and convents to choose from: San Nicolas, San Esteban, San Lesmes, Santa Maria la Real, La Merced or the Convent of Santa Clara are the ones that come to mind without even thinking it.

You can also go to the Monastery of Las Huelgas, where Leonor Plantagenet is buried. And who is this girl? Well, she is no other than the sister of Richard the Lionheart, the King that appears in all the Robin Hood movies.

And one last tip if you are around the area: spend a couple of hours visiting the Museum of Human Evolution of this city, with an optional trip to the site of Atapuerca. The only way we have today to take a trip to the past of more than one million years to visit our ancestors.
