There are places in this world that really look like they are made for a postcard. Well, one of them is Puentedey, in the north of the province of Burgos, with a town placed practically on the top of an amazing and huge stone arch.

We have two theories about this arch: the first says that it is due to a geological phenomenon of erosion, which means that between the water of the river, the softness of the rock and the patience of the centuries, this wonder of nature was formed. The second theory, on the other hand, maintains that it was God himself who, in a matter of seconds, pierced the rock with his divine finger to create this bridge… So, it is up to each individual to believe whichever explanation fits most.

In any case, you must know that we owe the name, Puentedey, to the second theory. And you must also know that you have to go to Puentedey, either by car, motorbike or on foot. Or in a helicopter, if you feel like it. But by no means, you should miss seeing this phenomenon and take a walk around the town. There you will see the beautiful church of San Pelayo, which is from the eleventh century, and on the bridge itself, you will find the Palace of Porras, with its two towers and an appearance of a fortification that your camera will love.

And also, in this area, the impressive karst complex of Ojo Guareña, one of the largest in the world, is waiting for you. A landscape in which wind, rain and other atmospheric agents have acted on the mineral according to their desire and caprice.

The result is hundreds of caves and galleries perforating a relief of fantastic shapes that, also, preserve traces of the remote presence of the human being. There are cave paintings from ten thousand years ago, footprints even older and vestiges that take us back up to seventy-thousand years ago. Along with it, there are remains of medieval sanctuaries and prints, so everything seems to indicate that for thousands and thousands of years these grottos were used by the man without almost any interruptions. To date, large amounts of new invertebrate species have been found in them which are delights for biologists.

Ojo Guareña is a very unique place. A natural monument crossed by some hiking trails and dotted with viewpoints that serve as the stage for that postcard which you shouldn’t take long to visit.
