What to see in Fornalutx

If the whole Island of Mallorca is famous for its beauty, imagine how its prettiest village must be. Well, better than imagining it, is to see it with your own eyes, so let's start by taking a map and looking for the Sóller Valley, in the heart of Sierra de Tramontana. That is where Formalutx is.

This village has been awarded many prizes for how well it has managed to conserve, look after, and beautify the old town. An old town that, like so many others on the peninsula, has an Arab past and a Christian reconquest. After the latter, and following the custom, they quickly erected a Gothic Church, but there isn't much left of that medieval temple, for the usual reasons: centuries and centuries of works, renovations, repairs and demolitions. So its current appearance is rather Baroque and is the perfect place to start your walk through the beautiful cobbled streets of the town.

Also, the church is next to the Plaza de España, where you can have a coffee in one of the tables outside the bars and pinch yourself to convince you that you are indeed in the middle of all this beauty and not about to wake up from your nap to go back to work.

In this area, the highest in Fornalutx, your time will fly by, and you will shot photos and megapixels as if your life depended on it. But lower down also await you wonders such as the City Hall and its spectacular defensive tower. Wherever you go, remember to pay attention to the tiles that stick out from the façades of the houses. You can find in some of them some curious paintings, almost always in red, which is a centuries-old tradition around here. Apparently, the drawings and composition of the painted tiles did not have an exclusively decorative purpose; they were also used symbolically, to protect the inhabitants of the house from danger and misfortune.

If your photo marathon in Fornalutx leaves you some time, and space on your camera, you can take a walk along one of the hiking trails in the area, or go to the sea for a swim in places as paradisiacal as Cala Deià.

Listen to us. This is a beautiful and special place, not-to-miss.
