Asturias has a reputation for being very beautiful, and, among other things, it is because of villages like Torazu. This is an idyllic place, located between green mountains and with only just about a hundred inhabitants. In other words: peace, tranquillity and beauty in abundance.

Between the old hórreos (a kind of granaries typical from Asturias), the traditional houses and the charm of the streets with their nooks and crannies, you will feel like staying a few more days, but while you think about it, go to the Church of San Martin el Real. Those who know say that it is a perfect example of the Baroque in rural areas and that its appearance owes much to the rather severe architectural style that prevailed with El Escorial. But above all, Torazu stands out for the height of its bell tower and the fantastic views that offers.

Although this beautiful Church of San Martín is probably the most important building in the village, it is not the one with the most peculiar history. This honour belongs to the Sienra Chapel. Legend has it that the locals wanted to build it in the highest part of the town, so they got to work in the chosen place. But the following morning, they found all the materials for the construction in a lower place, as if by magic. They brought everything back up and continued their work, but the next day, wham! Things had gone back down by themselves again. After deliberating for a while, they concluded that it looked like a miraculous sign, and therefore, it had to be followed. They forgot about the high place and erected the chapel where the miracle had indicated, which is precisely where it is today.

But miracles aside, the architecture of Torazu deserves to be seen with our eyes wide open, because surprises await you, like the Casa La Mira, or the Casa Los Mieos. In the latter, it is said that bizarre things happened about a hundred years ago, like objects that were flying alone, noises of crawling chains and phenomena of that kind. Of course, word got around and buses full of people who wanted to see those prodigies started to arrive. Finally, the owners of the house ended up hiring a spiritualist who, by hard work, cleaned the house of ghosts.

Stories like this await you behind many of the corners of the beautiful town of Torazu. If you ask the locals, you will surely find someone who tells them all in full detail … and if you are not interested in the legends, do not worry because the visit is worth it just for strolling through its narrow streets.
